1. What's your name and title/business name? Where are you located, city, state, country location?
Hello! I’m Kitty Jardenil, an 18-year-old artist from Parañaque City, Philippines. I can’t say I run a studio (yet) but I’m an independent and young freelance artist who accepts commission work and does all sorts of projects, from murals and T-shirt design to glass and chalk lettering.
2. What's your educational and professional background, i.e., college, professional school, high school, apprenticeship, etc.?
I’m currently in my freshman year in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, an institution located in the heart of Manila. It’s the best college in the country when it comes to Multimedia Arts, a course that tackles all kinds of media from web design to filmmaking, and so I chose this school for that.I’m hoping to take a master’s degree in graphic design after college. That would be awesome.
3. Preferred tool(s) and medium?
My preferred tools always vary depending on my mood. I consider myself to still be in the experimentation stage, where I play around with different media. However, so far I really love chalk, papercutting (though really hard), and the old Pen tool.I’ve been telling myself I don’t really need an iPad Pro, but I feel like my process would be faster by 300% if I had one. Hopefully I can save enough for one!
4. Where or how do you "recharge your creative battery," i.e., books, blogs, music, art, exercise, meditation, prayer, hobbies, interests, etc.?
I constantly need recharging, and to do so I do a variety of things. Even after scrolling through Instagram and seeing countless amazing works by my favorite artists, I try to go through Pinterest and look at not only lettering work but also graphic design work. I also consult my growing library of art books and paraphernalia; believe it or not but I hoard pretty brochures, flyers, stamps, and other knick knacks I can get my hands on.When I’m completely stumped with art, I just do what I do best: bingewatch shows and movies. I’m currently trying to finish the last season of Orphan Black.
5. Tell us something about you that might surprise or delight us.
Before I became a letterer, I was super set on becoming a writer, whether it be of fiction novels or of poetry and prose. I used to write everyday, trying to weave a web of words that could bring out what I needed to say. I was inspired by my habit of reading. However, I slowly lost touch with it (which makes me sad until today) solely because of lack of focus (it’s not because I hate reading now!), and together with it my writing. Nowadays, I only write in catharsis, when I’m overwhelmed and I need to release.
