Growing produce in Autumn
My spouse and I are thinking about planting a vegetable garden. I know we’re starting late but we have a good reason. Or we created a reasonable excuse.
In late spring we had our yard overhauled. It was looking deserted. Both front and backyards were covered in dried grass and weeds with thistles. In my dreams we’d have a goat or a cow in the yard to graze and mitigate the lawn horror. In reality we’d have dirt with piles of poo everywhere from a goat or a cow.
We hired a company to remove the grass and replace it the yard with California native plants. We had other things done to the yard. Too numerous to talk about and too boring for you to read. Now the yards look so much better and the plants are easier to maintain. We replaced the old flowerbeds with a new set for vegetables and herbs. When the work on the yard was complete we were heading into July.
So we looked to the fall for a new season of planting. Leafy greens would be the good and heartier option. Tomatoes and beans need longer hours of summer sun. I sowed lettuce and spinach seeds. Nothing to show for the effort though a week or so has passed. We’re hopeful. There’s still time to buy plants at the local nursery.
