Send a letter to a friend
I continue to draw letters - to what end? I’m still working on it. When I draw letters I incorporate lines and shapes. The act of drawing a letter then filling it with lines and shapes calms me. So my lettering practice becomes a meditation. Now, I have notepads, notebooks, and random sheets of paper filled with letters. What now?
Should I keep making letters to fill the miscellaneous notebooks I acquired over the years? Yes. I need to keep my head on straight. Should I find a way to use my lettering in commercial projects? Yes. A man’s gotta eat. Should I draw letters from friends’ names? Yes. I want to keep connections with the people I know and love.*
So I came up with a project to stay connected with my loved ones and to meet new people. Through an Instagram post, I’ll “send” a letter to a friend - just one letter from their name. It could be their first letter from their first name, last letter from their last name, or a letter I like to draw. Since the letters will be hand drawn on paper I’ll photograph it then post and tag the photo. If a recipient wants the letter I’ll send the physical piece (sending within the US for now). Let’s see what happens.
So, who should I start with?
First letter of this personal project.
