A Memory From A Vacation In Maine

When we were Midwesterners we took our vacations in Maine. In late summer we packed the car for the 12-hour drive from Ohio. The closer we got to the Atlantic ocean we could feel the stresses of work days and every days just fall away. Nearly every year we’d take a detour on our way. We stopped in Sarasota Springs in New York. Twice we ferried across Lake Champlain. We stayed in Burlington once. We decided not to stay the second time because of experience with bed bugs. Ew! We stopped in Boston for Harvard Square, Faneuil Hall, and family.

When we arrived to our favorite town in Maine, Ogunquit, you’d find us on the beach, walking along Marginal Way, and sipping coffee at Bread & Roses cafe. The coffee at the cafe was so delicious. On the side of the cups was printed a Turkish proverb. I loved every last, strong, black drop.

The coffee was all the proverb described. A few years later I created this lettering design. It’s one of my personal favorites.
